The Barriers – Spiders/Formello |
There are a few low level wandering monsters in these caves: nephilim and goblins near the Lair of Motrax, spiders around the Spider Caves and some rather nasty undead near the Blasted Ruins.
The caves in the southwest around the Little Vale and the Tiny Slith Fort can only be reached from a river. You could wait until later in the game and approach this area from the river to the west, which flows from the Northern Waters past Fort Dranlon and onto Almaria. You will in any case need to buy a boat from Tess in Fort Draco to be able to get to Solberg's Tower. So why not early on in the game?
There is a group of wandering araneae in this area. They are rather tough, but you get a dialogue which asks if you want to avoid a fight.
The stolen spider eggs can be found in this dungeon, but to reach it you must get through some sticky webs which can only be passed if you have touched the water in a pool in the Spider Caves.
The brigands Ko the Captain of the guard in the Lair of Motrax asked you to eliminate are wandering around this area. After you have dealt with them you can not only pick up their equipment but you also get 100 coins.
There are some rather nasty wandering undead around these ruins. The undead inside are not quite so difficult, so if you can sneak in, you can clear this dungeon out for Captain Graham.
A lone ice lizard is skulking around in the corner of this cave. It does not drop anything nor is it guarding any treasure.
There is a corpse with an Ash Bow in a hidden tunnel.
Six Empire soldiers and their captain are camping here. If you eradicate them they will drop some decent equipment and you get a red pass.
When you approach some totems in a corner (F on the Worldmap) the spirit of a mage materialises and tells you that he was ambushed by some ogres in a secret valley to the south. It gives you the quest to revenge his death by killing them (Reward: the spirit prays for you but that does not seem to affect any statistics, except that you get 15 xp).
A curious little cave where you can pick up a bit of loot.
Although Tor is not very friendly if you have a Nephil in your party, he will teach you Barter after you have rendered him a small service. His wife Carol is interested in algebra and is also a healer.
A group of humans is being attacked by Nephilim. If you help them out, their leader Mage-Lieutenant Tarrick gives you a flask of Healing Elixir.
This house can only be reached with the Orb of Thralni.
This dungeon is a bit tricky, but most of it is possible for a relatively low level party. There is some uesful treasure and a L3 spell here.
You can get a quest here early in the game. Later when you have Magi clearance you can learn a lot.
This cave is hidden behind the Nehilim Castle. If you have read the scroll with the password you can get from this cave into the castle.
This is where the Nephilim Cheftain resides who Captain Vidican asked you to kill.
You should look at this obelisk (O on the Worldmap) when you visit Solberg.
This clearing is marked as hostile because some nasty monsters are lurking in it. They must be cleared out before you can pick the herbs.
Vail has a few scrolls to sell at an exorbitant price.
The GIFTS (Giant Intelligent Friendly Talking Spiders) live here. After talking to them I am not quite sure about the correctness of the adjective "intellegent"!
Is this little fort friendly or hostile?
Solberg has hidden himself away in this remote tower.
The ogres which the spirit of a mage wishes you to kill are in a secret tunnel (U on the Worldmap). There are nine of them and they drop the usual Bronze Greatswords when killed. After the battle you find 125 coins.
Note: There is a printing error in the Hints Book, which says the Ogres are at P which is actually in the Vahnatai lands.
You can visit Walby and look at the goods he has to offer, but it is better to come back when you have the found out the password to the Empire caches.
This dungeon has a number of surprises. The brigands who stole the shipment of arrows for Fort Ganrick have their hideout here. There is also a lot of loot to be picked up.
There is a corpse here with a Wand of Bolts. If you take it you disturb an arenea and four giant spiders.
There are patches of Spiritual and Healing Herbs in the Remote Clearing.
