Formello is the biggest town in northeast Avernum. Until the barriers have been removed (i.e. in the first part of the game) this is the only place you can buy spells or (other than Walby who is rediculously expensive) get items identified. There are also some shops and missions.
As soon as you enter the eastern part of the town a Vahnatai appears and causes a cavequake which opens up a large crevice in the walls. He tells you that humans have stolen three Crystal Souls. You should visit him to protest the innocence of the Avernites.

He makes potions and sells a variety of items including Fine Lockpicks and Energy Potions. If you ask him about potion ingredients he will give you the quest to find Healing Herbs for which he will pay 30 coins per charge – a rather good deal because they do not weigh much, are easy to find and you usually find more than you need for potions. | exorbitant, Quest |

Rose | Guest | She moans about Townsend but will tell you about the Remote Clearing. She is also the person Harg in Fort Draco wanted you to deliver a marriage proposal to. If you do so she tells you that she has no interest in him and that you can tell him that. If you return her message to him he gets angry and you loose reputataion. | |
Tybolt | Townsman | He is tending the mushrooms in the SE of the town and tells you not to touch them. You can however pick up most of them without anybody getting annoyed. |
It is always a good idea to talk to everybody. The following notes give hints on hidden rooms, traps and puzzles.
There is an inn run by Gibbon. Rooms here are cheap (5 coins) Once you have cleared out the ghost in one of the guest rooms he will let you rest without charge. You can leave characters in the room directly north of the southern city gate.
The town's treasury seems to have been destroyed by the recent cavequakes. It was in any case robbed by adventures years ago. There are however a few things to pick up in the archives to the east of the City Hall: some magic scrolls in the bookshelves and a gold ring which you can steal in the locked room to the east.
There are two hidden rooms in this town.
To the north of the archives in the City Hall is a bit of wall that can be broken down with Move Mountains. Behind it is a spell Tome which teaches Far Sight L3, but you can only read it if you have a deciphering lense.
Alice hinted that this ritual is somewhere around the town. There is a secret room in the NW corner of the town which can only be reached from the path between the moat and the town walls.
If you kill the ghost in the padlocked room in the inn, you can pick up a Silver Necklace and a few other things. Gibbon will also let you rest without charge. The two other locked rooms in the inn do not contain anything interesting.
In the southeast of the town is an obelisk with an inscription which should be read. It will be needed later in the game.
Jasmine's shop in the north of the town has been closed down and locked up. There is not much here except two Iron Bars which you could sell.
