General Hints

This stronghold is perched atop a small hill in the wilds on the edge of the giant lands. The inhabitants are a motley mix of humans, nephilim, and slithzerikai, all dirty, serious, and heavily armed. And yet, somehow, they seem to be working together peacefully to maintain and expand this keep.

Notes

It is always a good idea to talk to everybody. The following notes give hints on hidden rooms, traps and puzzles.

Get Pyrog's Papers for Evyss

Pyrog's Lair is not far away to the north of this town. This dragon is however not exactly easy prey. Evyss will give you a Drakeskin Cloak (Armour 10%, value 1000), 500 coins and about 45xp for the Dragon's Papers. Do not forget that Rita and Thantria are also looking for this tome.

Evict Cenac

Cenac, a former warrior of the Empire, has taken up residence in the northeast tower of his Freehold. Kyass asked you to evict him.
There is a ladder in the Guardhouse north of the east gate. The corridor leads to a locked door (TU 12), but there is also a button on the west wall which opens a hole bypassing the door. Round the corner you will meet the mage Stanous supported by 4 Rouge Warriors and a Rouge Archer. The mage drops a Spineshield Scroll when you kill him. Having disposed of these rebels you can go downstairs. Luckily there is a closed door at the bottom of the stairs so that you can prepare for the battle with Cenac who is backed up by 2 Rouge Archers and 5 Rouge Warriors. Cenac is a bit tough but as he has no magic, you can just pummel him until he weakens and dies. This group drops a few good things including a Girdle of Avoidance. After picking up all the goodies you can find, you can unlock the gate and report back to Kyass who gives you nothing but about 50xp. Now you can begin to trade with the people in this town.

Recruitment: Patrick's Tower

Kyass is looking for mages to come to his Freehold and aid in its defence. He has heard that an unhappy wizard named Lethem can be found in Patrick's Tower. Go there and convince Lethem to work for a new employer.
Lethem is in the cellar of Patrick's Tower. He is easy to persuade. When you report back to Kyass he rewards you with 250 coins, a Wisdom Crystal, a Scroll – Return Life and about 40xp;

Recruitment: Abyss Mage

He has heard that an enchanter was recently banished to the Abyss, though he might not have arrived there yet. Find him and convince him to work for Kyass.
The most likey places to try are Fort Saffron and Fort Spire. When you have found him and report back to Kyass you will be rewarded with 350 coins a Rod of Alacity and about 35xp.

Barghan Diplomacy

Kyass gave you a message to deliver to the warrior in command of Bargha. Some bit of diplomacy, most likely.
Although the mayor in Bargha was never very helpful, he was previously not hostile. Once you have got this mission however, things are not so sinmple. Once you get up the stairs to his office he slams the door shut and two Guardian Hellhounds appear and two Trained Basilik come from the east and west. When you finally get through to him he takes the message, reads it and throws it away. It was apparantly an offer of alliance between Kyass and Barghan, which Maher will not accept. Kyass sympathises a bit about the behavior of the mayor and rewards you with 400 coins, a Sarkagradian Shield and around 35xp.

Chief of the Giants

There is a fortress full of giants to the west of the Freehold, and they have been causing increasing problems. You are to go there and slay their overseer, in order to communicate Kyass's displeasure.
There are actually two “Overseers” in the Giant Castle. I assume that Kyass means Overseer Fnargh on the dais in the feasting hall. As I always kill all opposition in the castle I have never been able to confirm this hypothosis. In any case when you report to Kyass that you killed the overseer he rewards you with 500 coins, a Lilliputian Band and about 30xp. Now you can buy spells from Evyss, training from Hrror and goods from Kendrew at “slightly expensive” prices. These prices can be lowered to “pretty average” if you get Pyrog's Papers for Evyss or give Kyass Drath's Spellbook. Bringing both these books here does not reduce the price further, so I usually give Drath's Spellbook to Thantria who pays more for it.

Drath's Tome

A highly magical undead horror lives in the Scree Caves, just north of the Great Cave. This malevolent being might, Kyass suspects, own a magical tome of considerable power. You will be rewarded if you bring it to him.
If you give Kyass the tome he will reward you with 700 coins, the Spear of Tears (a very powerful pole weapon value 3000) and about 40xp.

Killing Kyass

I have not yet tried to kill Kyass, but I got a nice email form Moria whose description I quote in full here:

If you go to Kyass and decide to fight him, everyone in the room will immediately become hostile including the Kitchen Helper (who is a low level Mage). This group will include an assassin, one of the Mages you helped recruit (the other will come to help Kyass soon), Evyss, and several Warrior and Archer Defender. After taking out this initial group, concentrate on Kyass (he has some protective and regenerating magic but no offensive magic but he has some strong armor) because an archer and a warrior will continue to come down the stairs to aid Kyass until you defeat him.

After that, you'll have to do some clean up of the rest of the Freehold because all with be hostile, including the merchants. After collecting all the loot I could (I am still missing the stuff in the desk in Evyss' house because it is behind a L3 barrier and I've only got L2 at the moment). The loot is pretty extensive, including potions, armor, weaponry, scrolls, coins, and some other sale-able items. It totals around 12,000 coins.

Actually you do not have to kill anyone to get past the barrier in the room behind the Sage's Hall where Evyss is to be found. It is hardly worth stealing these well protected goods because there are only some scraps of parchment and a charge of greymould to be got.
