Great Cave |
This is the heart of Avernum. The Castle is the residence of King Micah and the administrative centre. To the east is the Tower of Magi, to the west hostile lands inhabited by drakes and dragons, to the northeast waring Sliths and to the northwest Bandits and worse.
When you first cross this bridge over a yawning chasm you will be ambushed by three Gazers and three Eyebeasts.
A lone messenger is camping here outside a ruined farmhouse. He was attacked by gremlins while taking a message from Fort Remote to the Castle. He thinks the gremlins took it to their cave to the south and begs you to recover it for him. He rewards you with a pair of Tinkers Gloves (600 coins +1 to Tool Use), about 35 xp and 1 reputation.
Bandits have hiddem a Steel Helmet and 200 coins here.
Here is evidence of the activities of the Scimitar. If you invesigate the cave you get 50 coins and an Energy Elixir.
Even if you kill the Chasm Drake you cannot persuade Sabrina in Blosk to join you!
Very good armour at pretty average prices. In this game you cannot however sell your loot here.
Although it is deserted (and also unfortunately reveals no loot) it is rather disturbing to find an Empire outpost here, deep in Avernum. This can only mean that the Empire has some secret way of getting down (and back up again) somewhere in the vicinity.
Perhaps you can find a way to the surface here.
Four Vengeful Shades and a Gazer are hovering in this secluded cranny. When you have eliminated them you find a Wisdom Crystal and three Flawless Crystals.
This is the cave Alexi told you about.
The Orb of Thralni is needed to reach this island. If you enter the ruined hall you will be attacked by 4 Basilisks and 4 Mutant Lizards. On searching their nests after you have disposed of them, you find a Reflecting Shield (value 750 coins) and 250 coins.
Three drakes and two cyrodrakes are standing in front of a body. After defeating them you can examine the corpse and find a Battle Crystal.
A group of merchants are being attacked by a Rouge Mage, 3 Rouge Archers and 5 Rouge Warriors. If you help them out (and survive) the traders will give you 20 coins and a Scroll – Speed Burst. They cannot reward you with very much because most of their supplies were destroyed in the attack.
Sells not only mushrooms but also herbs (Healing, Spiritual and Energetic Herbs as well as Mandrake but unfortunately no Greymould) at very reasonable prices.
Among the remains of a humanoid in a hidden cave is a Purging Crystal.
Silverlocke sells rather unintersting potions at expensive prices.
There is a slith partol guarding the path from Gnass to the road leading north from Fort Emerald. The text says that they move out of the way to let you pass. The path is however blocked by rocks so that you cannot actually get past. The only way to get onto the road leading north to the Slith Fortification is through Fort Emerald,
After dispatching lots of Araneae and Giant Spiders you can learn Dispel Barriers L1 (saving 1000 coins per person).
The Basilisks that Mayor Bevan in Almaria asked you to kill (R on the Worldmap).
Amzingly the old smith Sathis has managed to survive here in the wilds. He sells his products mainly to Sulfras, but will offer you a motley assortment of goods at a high price.
Shaynee is at S on the Worldmap and sells a few miscellaneous items including a bag of sugar at expensive prices. If you have delivered Leith's message to her, you will get about 60 xp and she will let you examine her scrolls, which teach you Mass Healing L3.
The Fire Lizards (actually four Drakes and five Crocolisks) Captain Bronwen asked you to dispose of are here (T on the Worldmap). After disposing of them you find a corpse which was carrying an Invulnerability Potion.
The mighty dragon Sulfras will help you if you complete a mission for her.
The ring (value 2500) you find in this cache is very useful for warriors.
You get around 5 xp for discovering this wishing well. I have not noticed any benefit from throwing coins into it. You could alteratively take the 100 coins that are lying there. I have noticed no adverse effect of doing so, but I have heard that you loose 1 reputation.
An Empire Wizard along with six Golems are waiting to waylay you.
Great Cave farmers have reported a new clump of lethal fungus here (X on the Worldmap). After you have killed them you find a Polar Fur Cloak and you can get a reward in Blosk.
If you approach this landing stage you will discover a rather strong slith raiding party. After you have killed them you find that one of the shamans was wearing a shawl of clumsily stitched rat skins – a Noble Shawl which offers some good protection.
There are no regenerating patches of potion ingredients in the Great Cave.
