List of all towns and shops in Avernum
This is the cave Alexi told you about. The stolen message he wants is in a chest to the north of the cave and there is some treasure in a chest surrounded by lava right near the entrance but getting to these palces is difficult. This cave is very confusing. It is no surprise to find gremlins everywhere, whereby the GREMLINs are particularly annoying! You will come across dead ends, stairs and trapdoors to the cellar, and ladders up again everywhere as well as portals which transport you to other parts of the cave.
It is almost impossible to describe this cave in words, so I have decided to produce enlarged plans of the cave and the cellar which can be opened in seperate windows. A click on one of the above images should also open the enlarged version in a new Window. This will only work if pop-up windows are allowed for this site (homepages.uni-regensburg.de).
Here is a list of the Portals marked on the enlarged map.
Portal | Destination | ||
---|---|---|---|
D | portal in SW corner of the region accessible from the cellar. In the Hints Book this spot is erroneously marked as the location of Alexi's message, which is aktually round the corner to the north at d | l | this destination is used by many transporters |

F | the right hand portal in the T-shaped closed area | f | an L-shaped closed area with a trapdoor and another portal |

There are no secret doors in this dungeon. Before we go on to describing how to find the treasure, it would be a good idea to explain the symbols used in the enlarged plans.

The portals, trapdoors and other items are identified by letters or numbers. The letters A to K are also used in the Hints Book and depict the same location in these notes.
Alexi's message is relatively easy to find: down the stairs at B, up the ladder C. (The message is in the blue chest at d and not as in the Hints Book at D.)
Finding the Gremlin's treasure is a bit more complicated. Use the transporter at E to reach the T-shaped closed area at e. Take the portal F on the right to reach an L-shaped closed area. Use the trapdoor G, go to the NW corner of the cellar and climb the ladder H. Ignoring the numerous portals find the trapdoor I. In the cellar again go to the east of the closed area and ascend the ladder 2. The treasure chest is behind a barrier. This Treasure is really worth the effort: 596 coins, a Platinum Ring, a Gold Necklace, Mandrake, Greymould, a Wand of Alacrity and the very potent Oozing Sword (worth 2500 coins).
You can find Lord Chuckles skulking away in a cranny in the NE of the initial area. Not only is he is rather tough but when he has received so much punishment that his health points are nearly zero, he disapparates! You can find him again at K where the procedure is repeated. He can finally be finished him off at A. Leith in Blosk will reward you for killing him. There is also a bit of miscellaneous loot to be found (s. Interesting Items above).
