The Great Cave and Empire controlled Lands to the West |
This is the economic and administrative centre of Avernum. There are many interesting towns to vist and no wandering monsters in the east. In the west near the road from Dharmon to Fort Remote enemy spies and rakshasi can be expected.
All the lands to the west of Fort Remote are controlled by the Empire. There are lots of Empire patrols composed mainly of mutant giants wandering around.
After fighting some nasty undead (lots of Spectres and then Fetid Zombies) you come to a cave entrance where a sword has been rammed into the wall. Your party needs a total strength of at least 35 to pull it out.
Although this fortress is reachable by the landroute through Fort Remote, it is probably better to find the teleporter code and use it.
Even with the Orb of Thralni, it is rather difficult to get to this ledge. The trick is to approach Shaynee's hut from the east along the north wall of the cave. Enter the hut and accept the offer to do some shopping. You do not have to buy anything but you must look at her goods. Otherwise you cannot get close enough to the water. Now you are right next to the hut on the automap. Save the game and use the orb to fly to the first island. Land and use the orb again to fly to the second island/ledge. Here you will find a number of Null Bugs guarding a Blessed Pike. [Orb of Thralni is needed]
This is the fontline. You can approach the gates and fight incrasingly difficult groups of enemy forces thereby picking up some good loot like Steel Chain Mail. After the third battle you find a Ring of Archery. If you try a fourth time you will just be paralysed and cut to pieces!
This ex-inhabitant of the Abyss has set up a shop in a very secluded corner of the Empire controlled lands. It is a wonder that he manages to survive since he only offers a few scrolls at expensive prices and the passing trade in this area is certainly somewhat limited.
This smithy just north of Dharmon offers some good quality armour (including a Crystal shield) at expensive prices.
A rather tricky dungeon that yields a few goodies including Arrows of Light and Bolts of Life.
The Orb of Thralni can be used to reach this island. On landing an Efreet will challenge you to a fight. If the various monsters do not kill you, the Efreet will rematerialise and reward you with 1 Parry apiece. Make sure that you have bought upto level 5 from Tokor-Te in Mancuso before comming here. [Orb of Thralni is needed]
A rather large group of arachnids (6 Araneae, 6 Giant Spiders and 3 Elder Araneae). When you have killed them you find a Dexterity Bracelet.
There is some greymould growing here which can only be harvested once. You also find a gold ring.
If you try to pass you will be asked for a blue pass and if you have one you will be allowed to pass. What is more you gain 10 xp!
A smapp cache containing 10 Steel Arrowas and some food.
In this strange and complex research fortress you can not only find lots of loot including the Orb of Thralni but also complete a quest and even pick up a new party member.
Your can learn Gymnastics at 5,000 coins for the whole party in the secluded hut. (L on the Worldmap)
Silverlocke is a bit fussy about selling you her advanced potions including Knowledge Brew and Heroic Brew. I have not found out what you must have. It sees to be a combination of level and reputation. It is worth buying all her knowledge brews.
If you approach the house here you find a group of Avernum soldiers camped around a fire. On approaching them it turns out that the soldiers are an illusion – they are actually two Rakshasi and a number of Giant Slugs.
An Empire patrol disguised as Avernite soldiers is wandering around this area. If you try talk to talk to them they attack.
Shaynee sells a few miscellaneous items at a reasonable (slightly expensive) price.
The mighty dragon Sulfras has been captured by the empire.
