List of all towns and shops in Avernum
You have alraedy heard about this curious research centre that the Empire has built in and around some caves that were previously infested by drakes. The Drakes were eliminated by adventures some years back and the Empire moved in as soon as they started to invade Avernum.
There are two main reasons for comming here: to find the Orb of Thralni which was stolen out of the Castle and to complete a mission for Genevieve in Dharmon. There are also some useful artifacts and a great deal of loot to be found here, not to mention an NPC who is willing to join your party or the Experience Points that you can win by pitting yourselves against a miscellany of dark creatures and evil wizards.
This dungeon is very complicated, so I have produced three enlarged maps (ground floor, cellar and lower cellar), each of which should open in a seperate window. Interesting locations are marked with a letter in a blue circle . Locations A to J are also marked with the same letters in the Hints Book. Staircases (open or hidden under trapdoors) are marked with yellow circles . The upper end is identified with an uppercase letter (e.g. B) whereas the bottom is marked with a lower case letter as b. An exception is the staircase at E which is marked as such on the plan in the Hints Book and comes out at G. As there is a lot of loot in this is dungeon I have not bothered to mark all of it, but valuable or useful treasure is marked by a green circle. . Secret doors are marked with . Furher exceptions are B and D which are also marked as such in the Hints Book.
The guardposts on either side of the gates are manned by Mutant Giants and there are various Empire soldiers around the arena.
What you do now depends on your aims: you can just get the orb and the plans with as little hassle as possible or you can clear the complete dungeon.
If you only want to get the notes for Genevieve and recover the Orb, the best route, after disposing of the resistance on the gates and in the arena, is to head for the NW staircase at A on the enlarged map (which can be opened in a seperate window).
The first room in the NW is a guardroom where four soldiers are sitting round a table. In the corridor to the north is an archer. Before going down the stairs you should prepare for a fight with two mutant giants. In the sleeping quarters to the east are six Empire soldiers. The door to the south leads to a winding corridor where an archer is waiting. Taking the door at the eastern end and through a further door to the east you find yourself in the "Four Way Pit", where two archers are waiting for you.
