Avernum 2 | Angierach/Battle Pit | Great Cave |
Navigation: General Hints, Notes
List of all towns and shops in Avernum
This Empire Outpost lies east of the Tower of Sulfras. The Crystal Soul of Vyvnas-Bok can be found here and there is a lot of good loot to be picked up but you need a relatively high level party and lots of Energy Potions. The Fortress can be reached by the direct route, but the entrance is guarded by two statues which need a lot of cave lore to be able to get past. The other way in is via the Teleporter in the Tower of Magi.
Whichever way you come in you find yourself on a small rock isthmus. There is a lever L which can be pulled to make a stone bridge appear. On reaching the main gate you get transported to the Battle Pit. If you survive the monsters here you will be flung into a prison cell. On escaping from the prison you have the choice of clearing the dungeon by killing all twelve Masters of this fort and picking up some very worthwhile loot, or just recovering the Crystal Soul.
This is one of the most complex dungeons in this game and is difficult to describe in words, so I have decided to produce an enlarged map which can be opened in a seperate window.
Before getting flung into the battle pit, it is a good idea to invoke the Beast Ceremony.
On landing in the pit you will be greated by some Hydras and Ice Hydras. After killing them you can look at the corpses lying around. One of them has an Energy potion which he seems not to have been able to use. You could now try to reach the portal in the south. If you however decide to wait around a bit, a number of Gazers and Eye Beasts appear. If you mange to dispose of these, they will be replaced by Ghouls. If you do not manage to get out, the undead will be followed by Mutant Giants. After them Golems will be teleported into the Pit. As soon as you reach the portal you will be flung into a prison where you will be left to starve to death.
Luckily there is a weak wall on the south of your cell. Following the passage to the west and then north leads you to a cell where you can meet the spirit of Quinby. If you ask him nicely he will tell you that there is a lever which opens the door to the cell block and he will weaken a wall, so that you can get into the next cell to the north. You must still unlock the door to get out of this cell and dispose of two golems. Behind the locked door in the SE of the cell block is a lever M which opens the door to the north. This door can however be opened with Unlock Doors L3. There are no items in the cell block that are worth picking up. To the north of the cell block is a corridor with a secret door in the east wall leading to the main corridor.
The Soul of Vyvnas-Bok is in the centre of the "Containment Chamber" to the east of the prison area. The door to this chamber can be unlocked with the Lich Key which is in the SE of the dungeon. Unlock Doors L3 works also on this door.
How you get to the Crystal Soul depends on your spell level and your inclination: If you have Unlock Doors L3 you can go directly to the Containment Chamber. With Move Mountains L3 you can fight past the Rakshasi and sneak in through a secret passage directly to the Lich Key (which is also a way to surprise Midori). With neither of these level 3 spells you will have to dispose of Midori to get the Key. You could of course eliminate all of the Twelve Masters and pick up the Crystal Soul later.
There are three Rakshasi and lots of demons in these chambers. There are a number of Energy Potions lying around and an Energy Elixir in the SE bookshelves. To the east of the chambers is a secret room with two trapped chests r one containing Bolts of Life and a Piercing Crystal and the other some Potion Ingredients.
There are two passages leading to this chamber. To the west is an observation room from which you can see the interior of the chamber and also be seen (and thus attacked) by the Black Shades skulling around there. The eastern passage leads to a door which can be unlocked with the Lich Key to be found in the extreme SE of this dungeon. Unlock Doors L3 also works.
Before you enter this chamber it is naturally a good idea to cast beast ceremony. Everybobdy says you should use quickfire to destroy the barrieres, but "Cloud of Blades" works just as well. The trick is to get in quickly and cast it on the two golems that are on the south wall. If you then position your warriors near or just south of the box and shield them (Arcane Shield) you can cast "Clould of Blades" a second time on the golems when they come up to attack. If you have level 3 you can cover the whole southern area with blades thereby eliminating the black shades and destroying the Vahnatai Barriers at the same time. If you only have level 2 there will be some holes in the fields and you may not cover all of the black shades.
The location of each of the masters is marked with an orange circle on the enlarged map, treasure with a green and special artifacts with a yellow circle. A pink marks a secret passages.
