This tower should be visited as soon as you have Magi-Clearance. You can learn a lot on the first visit but will also have to come back later.

Patrick | Mage | He is interested in the Vahnatai and asks you to get him some Vahnatai artifacts. After you have got them he will help you considerably. [Magi clearance is needed] | Quest |
Cochran | Alchemist | Sells some potion recipes and tells you about the "surface dirt" which he has managed to obtain. | exorbitant |

Avernum soldiers have managege to get hold of some of the supplies that the Empire troops have brought down from the surface with them. He has even got some garlic at last! |
It is always a good idea to talk to everybody and explore all nooks and crannies. There are some potion ingredients (spirtual herbs and greymould) in the NW and NE corners outside the tower.
Julz gives you two quests, the first to find some Borgia Toadstools, which you can find in Egli (Reward: Bind Foe L3). Then she wants some Greymould Salve for which she will reward you with Haste L3. The salve should be no problem: there is some greymould outside and you can find the recipe here if you have not already bought it from Piglet in the Tower of Magi.
Patrick is inerested in four different Vahnatai artifacts. If you bring all of them with you, you can save a lot of back and forth.
Item | Reward |
Vahnatai cloak | 100 coins, 5 xp |
razordisc | deciphering lense 5 xp |
fine crystal | 100 coins, 5 xp |
waveblade | 10 xp, 2 rep. |
When you have given him all four items he will give you the password to a book on his quarters. This teaches you Slow L3.
The tower is divided into four quadrants seperated by corridors traversing the whole tower.
Here are Patricks laboratory, his living quarters and a small garden with a pool. Ther are two tomes and a desk in Patricks's office. The left Tome contains some notes about Garzahd. The right one teaches you Slow L3 if you have completed his quest. His bedroom contains nothing at all. If he has told you about it you can press the button under the desk when you look at it thereby clearing the way to his secret laboratory.
Here you can talk to Jade who waffles on about concentration and tells you a bit about Arrows of Light. There is nothing worth having in the crates and chests except for a few herbs. The bookshelves yield the recipe for Greymould Salve. The Demon behind the barriers is actually friendly! In the NW corner is a plaque warning about Quickfire, which can be found through the hidden door and behind a magical barrier. If you want to brave it you could destroy the barrier and look in the chests. Both are trapped (level 16) but you find a Knowledge Charm in the left one and to the right a Heroic, a Restoraation and a Knowledge Brew.
Here is the library and a small herb garden. The library is run by Rita who can identify items and will tell you a bit about her current research: Arrows of Light. It is not worth looking at the bookshelves; you just need to walk by to learn a lot about various artifacts. (Do not forget the tiny room to the south.) Further to the east is another library room for which Magi-Clearance is required. Here you can learn about Mutant Giants and Doomguards from Kelli. The herb garden which is tended by Cochran is in this quadrant to the SE of the library.
East of the Conference Hall where you find Patrick himself, is a locked barrack with a small guarded (and locked) storeroom to the south. Neither contains anything more interesting than 50 Stone Bolts! Along the north wall of the E/W corridor are two doors. To the west is a resting room, which can be used at any time to recuperate. The eastern door is locked and leads to an empty bedroom.
Haswitha is wandering around the garden. To the south are two signs. One reads "Lithgow of Silvar / Magical Attache", but behind the door you find Julz who is conducting her alchemy research. The next sign reads "Captain Rabi / Garrison Commander" and he really is in the little room behind the sign. To the west are the dining hall, cellar and kitchen where Marco will tell you how pleased he is with the present food supplies.
To the west of the entrance chamber to the portal is a hidden door leading to a room guarded by ?? In the north is a tome which teaches Summon Aid L3. In the NW corner is a lever which frees a hidden door in the east wall of the entrance chamber. Here is an untrapped chest containing an Invulnerability Elixir, a Resistance Elixir and a Knowledge Brew.
Although the spelling ("Greymould" as in England or "Graymold" as in America) can still be contested, there is a lot less confusion about this substance than in the days of Avernum I. The big problem is that the herb is rather rare and the salve that can be made from it has immense healing powers and is therfore in these days of warfare in great demand. Greymould Salve is needed for Brian in Fort Emerald and the Poisoned Nephilim Village. Julz here in Patrick's Tower would also like some. It can be bought from Largo in Dharmon. You get a bottle of it as reward from Walner in Fort Duvno. Or you could make it yourself. The herb can be found in various places such as outside this tower. There is a patch just north and a little west of Silvar and a regenerating patch on an island in the river flowing out of the Northern Waters. The recipe can be bought from Piglet in the Tower of Magi or even found gratis in this tower. You need a potion making skill of 5 to make it.
There is no inn in this "town" but you can rest in a room just north of the Conference Hall where you find Patrick.
