This is the heart of Avernum. The Castle is the residence of King Micah and the administrative centre. To the east is the Tower of Magi, to the west hostile lands inhabited by drakes and dragons, to the northeast waring Sliths and to the northwest Bandits and worse.
A lone messenger is camping here outside a ruined farmhouse. He was attacked by gremlins while taking a message from Fort Remote to the Castle. He thinks the gremlins took it to their cave to the south and begs you to recover it for him. He rewards you with a pair of Gauntlets of Might, 25 xp and 1 reputation.
After killing the Chasm Drake you could persuade Sabrina in Blosk to join you

Here is evidence of the activities of the Scimitar. If you invesigate the cave you get a Healing Elixir.
Very good Armour including a crystal shield and steel chain mail at pretty average prices. Will also buy loot for unspectacular prices.
Although it is deserted (and also unfortunately reveals no loot) it is rather disturbing to find an Empire outpost here, deep in Avernum. This can only mean that the Empire has some secret way of getting down (and back up again) somewhere in the vicinity.

The Orb of Thralni is needed to reach this island. Six basilisks are protecting a Blessed Small Shield.
Four drakes are standing in front of a body. After defeating the drakes you can examine the corpse and find a knowledge brew.
Sells not only mushrooms but also herbs: Energetic, Healing and Spiritual Herbs as well as Mandrake at very reasonable prices.
Silverlocke sells advanced potions including Knowledge Brew and Heroic Brew. It is worth buying all her knowledge brews.
After dispatching 3 or more Araneae and lots of Giant Spiders you can learn Dispel Barriers L2
Amzingly the old smith Sathis has managed to survive here in the wilds. He sells his products mainly to Sulfras, but will offer you a motley assortment of goods.
Shaynee is at S on the map and sells a few miscellaneous items at a reasonable (slightly expensive) price. If you have delivered Leith's message to her, she will let you examine her scrolls, which teach you Mass Curing L3.
The mighty dragon Sulfras will help you if you complete a mission for her.
There are no potion ingredients in the Great Cave.
