The Tower of Magi, the Honeycomb and Environs (Mertis to Almaria) |
It is a good idea to visit the Tower of Magi fairly early on (for instance after getting the crown token from Mayor Evelyn for returning her necklace). This area is not too difficult for a level 12 – 14 party. The wandering ogres can however sometimes be a bit tricky.
Akhronath the lair of Grah-Hoth was destroyed when the Avernites lead by the Triad of those times, Erika, Partick and Rone, captured and imprisoned him. There is a Royal Seal hidden here, which you need for the mission to kill Hawthorne. There are lots of undead, imps and demons, so you need Repel Spirit L3 and the Demonslayer helps a lot. You also need a golden key.
Here is an isolated hut. If you knock on the door you will be greeted by a hermit who gives you a mushroom soup and offers to sell you a golden brooch for 300 coins. It turns out to be a Bladeshield Chain which is worth 300 coins and offers a modicum of protection.
A group of sliths accompanied by two mages have established an advance camp here. If you kill them they drop a bit of loot including a Seeking Rapier worth 2500.
The dragon Athron has erected many barriers to prevent people from visiting her. She has, however, some essential information.
When you come to this place you are offerd the choice of taking a wand or exploring further. If you pick up the wand you get into a fight with four demons and some imps. If you decide to explore further you get into the fight anyway, but without the wand of fire.
This is the way to Athron which is recomended in the Book of Answers (D on the Worldmap). I find it easier to go through the Honeycomb, but you must have sufficient cave lore to be able to get past a barrier to the south of her cave.
If you go into this abandoned campsite you can find a Speed Elixir.
Once Kelner has told you about it, you can find the password to Solberg's Tower here (E on the Worldmap).
If you talk to the people here, a woman will give you a tip that you should ask Dexter in Almaria about his tools.
In the middle of this lava cross an image of a great demon forms. If you do not run away it says that you should not to come back until you have freed Grah-Hoth.
If you do so, he will only tell you that his name is Astar and he wants revenge on Grah-Hoth and that you will have to be able to fly to reach his castle in the extreme NW of Avernum.
Here is a Blessed Steel Helmet.
There is a hermit wandering around here who sells items at a pretty average price and offers a good price for loot.
This island has been infested by a colony of poisonous fungi. If you eradicate them, you find 300 coins which they could not digest in their bodies.
This tower has been abandoned. To reach it however you must dispose of a group of gremlins.
If you drink the water in this pool you will charmed with Ward of Thoughts L1.
As well as lots of nasty ogres to get rid of, this dungeon has some nice treasure.
If you choose to fight this group of Cave and Draining Slimes you will find anEnsnaring Wand and 279 coins.
There is a plague of undead in the area. This could be the key to the problem.
The Dark Slith Priests who worship demons including Grah-Hoth have a piece of the Demonslayer.
Drinking from this pool gives you 10 xp.
There are two patches of potion ingredients in this area:
