General Hints

There are a lot of undead around Mertis. This dungeon seems to be the cause of the trouble. Before entering the cave proper you can find a potion on the corpse to the west.

Notes

This cave seems relatively simple: you circle around it in an anticlockwise direction killing undead and burning fungi on the way. There is not much treasure, just a few things in the sarcophogi. Do not get dispirited, there must be something here. So you plod on but come to a dead end.

Hidden Passages

There are two hidden passages here. One is in the east wall of the cave with the dead end. Round the corner are some greater shades are guarding a chest which is surrounded by a magic barrier (Dispel Barrier L1 or a piercing crystal). The Chest contains some coins and a Scroll – Powerlash. There is also a wheel, which, if you turn it, will remove a rock in front of a chest in the large cavern were the light fails before you enter the dark maze.

The second hidden passage is in the south wall of the penultimate crypt. When you get a bit further south and then go east the light fails.

The Dark Maze

First you must head to the SE, then along the south wall ignoring a passage to the north. Just after this you can find a button in the north wall which opens a passage to the north. You find yourself in a maze of tunnels with lots of undead and a few hidden doors. Since you cannot see any approaching monsters, it is a good idea to negotiate this maze in combat mode. Do not however let your party members get too far apart otherwise you will have difficulty reuniting them.

Now you have got to find a button to the southeast of this maze. Then back north ignoring the button on the northern wall – this opens a path to the NE which you can explore later. There should however now be a hole in the wall just west of the button. This leads to the chasm hall

Chasm Hall

Halfway across the pit there is a flash and two ghasts and a ghost appaer to the west and a further three undead to the east. When the ghasts and ghosts are dead you can leave the hall to the west and find that the light returns. Now life is much easier until you come to a barrier which needs Dispel Barriers L1.

Cursed Chamber

You eventually reach the origin of the trouble. Here is the Spectral Commander aided by three Ghasts and two Wights. He is rather difficult for a medium level party but when you have killed him (for the second time for him) you sense that the evil forces have weakend but the curse has not been lifted.

You can now look around and search the many dead bodies. Interesting items: Wisdom Crystal, a Pearl Brooch and a few coins. Now back to Elmer in Mertis to pick up your reward.
