The Tower of Barriers |
To get through this tower on the way to Hawthorne you need the chant that Khoth taught you.
There are some different ways of getting through this town. I will first decribe the direct way and then two rather easier alternatives.
As you approach the door you get a warning that there is great power just on the other side. When you open it you will find two Cryos Demons, two Mindtaker Golems, Ugrew Many-Stalks (a very powerful eye beast) and Gyt Diamond-Eye (another eye beast) in an alcove directly in front of you. There are also 4 Ur-Basilisks in the room. Ugrew is particularly difficult to kill because it has very good protection and only takes a few points of damage by every attack. When it eventually dies it drops a pair of Gazerskin Sandlals worth 3000 coins.
Now you can go into the garden directly to the south and meet the two Statues Helena and Ellen. Talking to them is a bit tedious but you can learn that Khoth built this tower and the magical fountain in the part of the Garden which cannot be reached yet. With a lot of coaxing Helena will even sing you a song:
Look upon the fountain there
Dangerous as it is fair.
But it could be very nice,
if you could drink its waters thrice.
There are also two blue chests in the SE and NE corners of the garden. Both are protected by magical barriers – in the SE corner level 3 (contains Gremould Salve, Armour Elixir and a Rod of Defence), in the NE is a level 2 barrier with a few potions.
Now you can now go to the barriers in the north or south. It does not matter which.
Rather than entering by the main door you can explore outside a bit. To the south is a narrow passage blocked by a level 3 barrier and to the north a small cave with three Ur-Basilisks. After removing the hindrances you can find a hidden button and enter the tower at the side. In this way you can take on the monsters piecemeal which makes the battle a bit easier.
You could just sneak through from one of the secret passages to the nearest barrier and then leave the tower by the east door. On the return journey after killing the emperor, however, the monsters are still there and you will have to kill them to get home. So you might as well kill them straight away.
As you get near the barriers you get a message that these are very powerful magical barriers that cannot broken by normal means. However the chant that Khoth taught you opens a gap in the middle.
If you can find the button you can enter the enclosed part of the garden with the fountain Ellen told you about. If you drink from it you will get the Dread Curse. Drinking from it a second time doubles the curse. Third time lucky?
If you drink a third time from the fountain the Dread Curses are lifted, health and spell energy points are restored for all party members and you get around 35xp.
