General Hints

Fort Dranlon is right on the front. There are Empire troops everywhere on the other side of the river and they often send patrols over to this side to attack the town or just waylay Avernum patrols, merchants or adventurers. To add to the troubles a few refugees from Cotra have made it here.

Notes

I use this town a great deal as a safe haven where I can recuperate and sell or store loot when out adventuring on the Lakes or in the Empire controlled lands in the northwest. It is always a good idea to talk to everybody.

There are no hidden rooms, traps and puzzles in this town but there is a storeroom in the SW of the central block. With the exception of a barrel containing an Iron Chain Mail (600 coins) there are only mediocre items in the crates and barrels here. The corpse right on the river bank in the SW corner of the town is wearing Fine Leather Armour.

Non Playing Characters

There are four NPCs in this game who will join your party. Whether you pick them up or not is up to you. But to do so, you must have an empty slot in your party. There are different ways of achieving this. You could start of with less people in your party and pick the NPCs up as you go through the game, which means that you must complete the first two chapters (the Barriers and the Dark Waters) with at most two characters and that you can pick up a maximum of three other characters. You could wait until one of your party is killed, which I find rather macabre. You could delete one of your party members. This is rather like killing him/her (or at best euthanasia). The last alternative is to deposit the superfluous character in one of the character storage areas in Formello or Tower of Magi. I find this method rather horrible: you are commiting your character to a lifelong imprisonment. It is similar to the fate the whole party suffers when you get caught stealing in the Tower of Magi. (Try it for a laugh, but save the ganme first!)

I usually pick Wendy up when I first visit Fort Dranlon and make a slot free by deleting my mage. (The "Use Ability" button and option d which is depicted with a skull!)

Resting

There is no inn in this town but you can rest in a room just east of the south gate. I also use this room as a depository for surplus items while on missions in the Empire Controlled Lands.
