This cave lies over a chasm which can only be crossed with the flying orb.

Notes

On entering the cave you find warnings that the cave is off limits and that unauthorised users of the portal will be summarily slain. But adventurers like you do not heed such warnings!

SW Passages

The entrance portal takes you to the SW passages. In the NE corner of these passages is a portal which takes you to the Lava Trap which has three Guardian Hellhounds and a Portal that takes you back to the SW Passages. There is however a series of buttons and secret doors that open up a passage in the the west wall of the northern arm leading to a portal which takes you to a lonely pool.

Lonely Pool

Proceeding north across the pool the wall disappears to reveal a large hall were two Banshees, four Revenants and a Skeletal Warrior lead by a Deathless Sentinel are waiting for you. After disposing of them you can look around a bit. In the NW is a Portal which takes you back to the entrance. You can ignore this for now and try to find the secret door to the east. Behind the magical barrier is the door to the barracks.

The Barracks

Before going through the door to the barracks it is a good idea to Haste and otherwise prepare for a big battle because there are lots of Empire soldiers including a number of Empire Infiltrators, Sharpshooters, two Second Circle Mages, Traitorous Rouges and Elite Soldiers lead by Commander Vyela in there. A few soldiers in the kitchen to the east also join in the fight. As soon as you have dispatched the soldiers you can explore this Empire outpost and pick up lots of loot. Vyela for instance was wearing a Bullseye Chainmail (value 2000).

In the SE corner of the barracks is a locked door leading to an office where a rather pathetic man named Windell is sitting at the desk. He tells you that he knows about the Scimitar and lets drop something about a scroll which they stole from a dragon (obviously the one Khoth wants) and tries to buy his life by bargaining with you. Whether you kill him or not does not seem to make much difference. As he is such a nasty little coward I usually kill him.

To the east of Windell's office is a locked bedroom with a blue chest in the middle of the room. Here is the scroll which was stolen from Khoth.

The Treasure Room

To the south of Windell's bedroom is a secret passage at the end of which you will be confonted by four Basilisks. After disposing of them you find barriers at both ends of the E-W passage. The barrier to the east can be removed by Dispel Barriers L2. The other one needs level 3.

Around the corner is a chest with a bit of loot and a Pedestal on which rests a tome that tells you about this place. Two pieces of information are very interesting. Firstly that the Empire stole a scroll from Khoth and that it is here. The second is that they have found several large crystals, each apparently containing the soul of some spirit. (The Crystal Souls which you will recover in Avernum 2).

There are further barriers to the west that need Dispel Barriers L3. Behind them is a chest containing a Wand of Ensnaring, a Battle Crystal and a Power Slash Scroll.

Now back to the Hall by the lonely pool and the teleporter to the NW which takes you back to the entrance of the cave.
