General Hints

The demon Lord must first be freed from his imprisonmen before he can be killed. Unfortunately he will escape your clutches when you open the bottle, so you will have to travel across the whole of Avernum in order to find him again and eliminate the threat he poses to the land.

The prison is in a massive square stone building with visible doors in the middle of the southern, eastern and western walls. There are also various guards in and around the building.

Notes

There is a Prison Sentinel (a rather tough golem-like creature that sometimes drops an Emerald) in the middle of each of the outside walls. I always deal with these before entering the building. When fighting these guards one of your characters sometimes gets teleported to an empty room in the middle of the building. You could get your party to open the intervening doors and fight their way through to each other. I prefer however to leave the party member alone until I have killed the sentinel. On leaving combat mode the party is reunited, usually outside the building.

The Inside of the Building

The central room is empty but the three rooms to the south, east and west are guarded by various monsters: two Guardian Hellhounds, a Divine Shade and a Golem in the east and west and two Guardian Hellhounds and two Golems to the south. It is better to enter these rooms from the outside because their inhabitants are near the inner doors. If you approach from the inside it is difficult to get a good shot at them.

After clearing the surrounding rooms you can enter the central room and then go north. There are some barriers which can be removed (L1) but the door to the north cannot be opened: So you will have to find another way in.

Humming Crystal

When you approach the SW corner of the building you get a message about a humming coming from the nearby spire. The entrance to this building is in the south. Here you will find a crystal, which opens a path in the north of the prison block. Just touch the crystal and you will find a portal on the north side of the building.

Freeing Grah Hoth

The portal in the north takes you to a closed area in the NE where another portal takes you to a closed area in the NW. The portal here takes you out of this area back to the directly accessible area north of the central room. You need to find the secret button on the west wall.

This opens a path to the east where you come across some barriers (L1) behind which is a vat on a pedestal. If you cut the seal you will release Grah-Hoth who tells you that he will not kill you yet. He does however poison you, but on the up-side you gain about 15 xp.

Treasure

Before leaving it is worth looking around for treasure. The Golems sometimes drop an Emerald or two. The Coffins in the guarded rooms contain a few items and a bit of gold and there is a small encosure to the NW of the main block in which a corpse is lying. Here you can find some coins and a Ruby.

Now you can report back to the king, who will only tell you to go off and kill the demon lord. The Fiery Demon at the Lava Cross to the west of the Tower of Magi will now talk to you, but it only tells you where Grah-Hoth's Tower is.
