General Hints

Fort Draco is the centre of mining in the north with the best ore in Avernum. The town can be approached from the east or south by land and from the west by water. It is not possible to enter it from the north. Although you can use the docks on the west, the entrances from the river to the moat are blocked by rocks.

Shops, People and Quests
Person Function Items, Quests and Notes Rating
Brandon Shipwright the only place to get a boat for the river in the NE of Avernum. You need one to get to Solberg. 300
Aife Alchemist She is the town Metallurgist. If you have heard about Phyllea Aife will tell you how to reach her. She will also buy Arenea fangs for 50 coins apiece. She will not however teach you any alchemy and has no potions for sale.
Phyllea Recluse She can be reached through Aife's shop or with a boat. She is distinctly unfriendly, but if Zathnia in the Tower of Magi has told you about Cortath, she will deign to tell you that he has a hut across the river to the west and then south.
Boutell Shopkeeper
(Armour/Weapons)
Boutell is the best smith outside the Great Cave and owns the biggest Anvil in the whole of Avernum. He makes fine weapons and armour for the army. He will however sell a few low end weapons at a pretty average price and armour very reasonably. He will also offer a reasonable price for your loot and can repair any weapon including the Demonslayer, once you have recovered the parts. When you finally get him to repair it you get not only the Demonslayer but also around 25xp and one reputation. pretty
average, very
reasonable
Bill Assistant Works in the smithy and will tell you to talk to Bill about wine.
Bill Assistant Works like his namesake in the smithy and will give you a quest to get some cheap wine for which he will pay 12 coins per bottle. Quest
Doc Innkeeper Doc does not have an easy time what with soot from the smelters and the rowdy miners. He does not have any rooms free but will sell you food and drink. pretty
average
Grant Guest She is having difficulties with her 'familiar', but tells you that she is on the way to Motrax, who is friendly and helps mages.
Lizard Familiar This little animal is a cheeky bit of work.
Frank Begger If you give him a few coins he will offer to give you information for a further 20 coins.
Carlos Shopkeeper
(Rations)
Sells rations. If you ask him if he knows a lot about the caves around here, he tantalisingly replies "Yes. Yes, I do." but goes no further. If he is so knowedgable he could at least train you a bit!
If pressed he will however tell you a bit about the Scimitar if you have not already heard about them.
exorbitant
Sue Shopkeeper
(misc. Items)
She has a motley collection of goods that are far too expensive. She will also give you the same information as Frank, but does not charge for it. utterly
rediculous

Further Treasures

There are a few things which you can pick up in Fort Draco

Ingot Storage

The door to the Ingot storage can be opened if you have a Tool Use of at least 11. Even if you can get in this way you still cannot steal the ingots because the guards outside the door will see you. It is therefore much better to open the series of secret doors as described above. There is still a trap which can be opened with a TU of 4. Then you can enter the storage room and steal 9 Iron Bars without anyone seeing you.

In the east of the pit is a chest containing four Gold Bars (three of which are marked as "not yours"). This chest is very difficult to see – thanks to Hank Wang for pointing it out to me.

Phyllea

The only good reason for visiting this rather rude person is to sell some rare fangs. At the end of the path running along the moat in front of her wokshop is a chest containing a Healing Potion.

Aranea Queen Fangs

In the Aranea Cave you can pick up some Aranea Queen Fangs. If you give them to Phyllea, she will reward you with about 10xp and 1 reputation. She will also let you have some Runed Plate Armour (Armour: 34%, Evasion: 6%, Resistance to Mind Effects: 20% and Magical Damage: 5%) which it is good for your mages who cannot cast spells with heavy armour.

The Cellar

In the cellar which can be entered via a trapdoor in the barracks are two rooms with some monsters (a nephar spiritist and 3 nephar in one room and 5 penned lizards in the other) which you can kill if you want a bit of experience. The Nephar drop a pair of Sandwormskin Boots and the Lizards a bit of fresh meat. The two cabinets in the passageway contain very little of interest.
