Fort Avernum | Arrival Cave |
You arrive alone and unprepared in some dark dank caves somewhere in Avernum. You have no choice but to go forward and hope to find some friendly souls who could give you some advice and maybe even help you.
After finding your way out of the Arrival Caves you should talk to Andrew and, as he recomends, visit Tor and Thairl. Speak to them and explore a bit. Outside the walls in the SE corner are two cave rats which you can kill. Then pick up a pair of boots nearby. In the NW corner is a corpse with an iron shield and another pair of boots. Look around the town talking to everyone who will talk to you. It is a good idea to examine every container (not forgetting nests in the caves and sewers under the towns) and pick up everything, that might be useful or can be sold. If something is marked as “not yours” do not worry: you can take it so long as no one is watching.

It is always a good idea to talk to everybody. The following notes give hints on hidden rooms, traps and puzzles.
The way from your arrival point leads to a door behind which you can find three Nephilim which are relatively easy to dispose of. They drop a bit of usable loot and to the SW is a chest with a few goodies. Further north are some Cave Rats which naturally do not drop anything. They were however guarding a nest comtaining two flawed crystals and a few other things. There are a few Flawed Crystals in the NW corner of the cave. It is often very difficult to recognise usable items which are lying around. So it is a good idea to use the “Pick Up” Button (or simply type i or g) regularly. This way you can find everthing which might be useful or sellable.
After dealing with the Huge Rats you have to go north past pool of stagnant water. To the east over the pool you can see a man, who identifies himself as Lagran. He tells you that he has stolen the key to the gate leading out of this cave.
The way now leads north. Round the corner to the east where you will come across Brissa and the three other new arrivals. You should talk to her and promise to deal with Lagran. The first of his “helpers” are waiting in the NE corner. Further south is the leader of the thugs himself. After he has received enough punishment from you he will open the gate and flee. You can now kill his minions, report back to Brissa and at last go up the stairs to the main town.
Although Lagran escapes this time you will have an opportunity to fight him later in the game.
Anastasia can be found in Silvar, which you should visit soon anyway.
The statue Nance in Cotra told you about is on the east side of the town. There is a Wisdom Crystal hidden there. You can find the crystal if Nance or Adam in Patrick's Tower has told you about it.
In the locked room in the SW corner is a tome which you can read if you have a combined Arcane Lore of at least 7. It will teach you Call Storm L3:
There are some coins and a scroll Group Heal in the eastern of the the two locked rooms.
In the small room in the barracks there is a desk from which you can steal 70 coins and an energy potion. (Be careful to make sure that no one is watching.)
Just south of the eastern gate is a storeroom with nothing but a barrel containig a flawed and a lovely crystal.
In the passage slightly west of this storerom is the official storage area for the fort. The door to the eastern room is not locked. There is not very much in this room except two Bars of Iron and a bag of sugar.
The western room needs Tool Use 5 to unlock the door. There are some goodies there. Behind the magical barrier is a chest containing a Scroll – Spineshield, an Energy Elixir and a Bag of Sugar all of which you can steal. If you give one of these bags of sugar to Gad in Formello you will loose reputation. So do not take any sugar here until you have completed his quest with sugar from elsewhere.
There is no Job Board in this town.
