There are lots of guards as well as invisible gardians and black shades here. There are however two prisoners Aydin and Josie who can be freed (for 5xp each) and a rather timid librarian Vikner who can give you some information about the place.
You normally come to this place fairly late in the game after finding the Ivory Key in the Tower of Elderan and when you have a strong party. You can howeverget in without the Ivory Key. The alterative way in is described in Notes at the end of this description.
There are three doors in the outer wall. Each one leads onto a ledge. The southern ledge has no steps but the northern and eastern ledges each have a staircase leading down to a canal filled with pack ice. If you have the Ivory Key you can find a boat under the east door and use it to row around the inner building. If you have good Pathfinder (Safe Travel works also) you can walk on the pack ice. This is actually better because there are various monsters to fight on the way round, which is much easier if you do not have to land the boat and disembark.
The Ice Lizards in the corners are best dealt with by a Bolt of Fire. If you have Repel Spirit L3 you can us this on the Imps in the west.
There are two secret doors into the inner building: one in the SE corner. This one needs Unlock Doors L3 to get further. The other one is in the west wall south of the main door. Here is a kitchen and a few empty cells and a locked door leading to an enclosure with three windows containing a giant slug and two shamblers. The slugs are a pain because they breath acid, which can only be cured by Curing L3. There is a secret door into the enclosure to the SW. It is best to send a warrior in to get rid of the slug as soon as possible.
To the north of the enclosure is the main hall with statues. If you do not go too far to the west they will not turn into golems, so you can avoid a fight with the six golems completely if you want to. North of the main hall is another slug/shambler enclosure. Round the corner in the NW corner of the building you can talk to Vikner. In his desk is another Ivory Key.
