| Formello |
Formello is the biggest town in the Eastern Province and should be visited fairly early on. Most things you need can be found here: training, food, identification, healing, selling, basic priest and mage spells, potions etc. A number of people will give you quests. You can also get enough food to last for the whole game and, if your tool use is high enough, rob the treasury.

It is always a good idea to talk to everybody. The following notes give hints on hidden rooms, traps and puzzles.
The inn here run by Gad. He offers a room at 5 or 15 coins.
In his Walkthrough AverMan gives a hint originally contributed by KevlarKid: In one of the barrels in Jen's foodshop there are 100 mushrooms and in another 50 dried meat. You can push the barrels to a quiet place (outside the walls where no one can see you or into the secret toolshed east of the City Hall) and loot them. 150 food will last the whole game, but there is actually enough food just lying around in towns and dungeons to make robbing Jen unnecessary.
In the Captain's Quarters in the barracks to the east there are a steel short sword and 32 coins which you can steal. (Do not forget to close the door first.)
There are two locked doors in the mayor's quarters in the NE of the town that lead to his bedroom. There is a trapped dresser containing 70 coins and a Blessed Short Sword which you can steal. In the eastern wall is a secret passage with a number of traps which leads to two chests. If you can disarm the traps you can get to the chests. Looking at the northern one sets off a trap which causes considerable damage. (You need enough health points and resistance to survive it.) Looking a second time reveals 3x250 coins, a Jeweled Ring and a Clumsy Ring all of which you can steal. Looking at the southern chest gives you the Dread Curse which can only be removed by Throndell in the Tower of Magi but I think it is worth it, because you can get a pair of Gauntlets of Might.
It seems that the only bag of sugar in this game is in a locked storeroom in the SE of Fort Avernum. If you complete this quest you will loose reputation. I like to keep my reputation, but it is your decision whether you get a few coins or keep your pride.
She is a somewhat complex character. There is always a lot you can say to her. Her Spells are expensive but she gives you a very good price for loot if you try to buy healing. She also sends you on an apparently wild goose chase to Motrax for a scroll on the history of priests in Avernum. Although he does not have the scroll, he will tell you to ask Khoth. If you report this back to Claudette she will give you an interim reward of a ruby, 20 xp and one reputation! When you eventually get the scroll she will teach you Unshackle Mind L3, which is very useful.
