The Hints Book says you cannot get through the barrier. Not in this game. When you dispel the barrier and step on one of the runes you get told
"Here is the grave and hiding place of the Vahnatai race. One day we may return to claim our home with love. Until then we sleep."
This is obviously a hint about Avernum 2. Although it looks rather different, this cave probably serves as the Barrier Tunnel in A2.
