GP on (The real Macaw):
My fondest memory of this recording is the eel and pie shop located nearby the South London studio where we cut it. I thought the mashed potatoes were good but producer David Kershenbaum thought they tasted like bum. I guess he should know as he is a bit of a potato fanatic. Incidentially, Kersch was chosen as producer because he is a good three inches shorter than me. Unfortunately, as with many very short people, he was extremely feisty and had his way with practically everything.
I Want You Back was recorded in a mobile studio called The China
Shop sometime in 1978 or 1979. I met Michael Jackson not long after and
told him I had done a version of the song. He looked at me like I had just
spoken to him in an alien language.
