YULE TUNES: It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas
David Okamoto

From the holy to the hokey, the irreverent,
Christmas music comes in all attitudes and sizes this season.

Various artists, Holiday Heroes (Soul Purpose)
The yearning passion of soul music and the joy of the holidays always seem to make for a winning combination. This album, which partially benefits Feed the Children, features newly recorded originals by Chuck Jackson, Mavis Staples and Muscle Shoals veterans Dan Penn (Make Somebody Happy for Christmas), Spooner Oldham (Christmas in the City) and Donnie Fritts (Sears and Roebuck Santa Claus). Most are driven by the thick guitar licks, heavenly Hammond B-3 and gospel-style harmonies that are Southern-soul trademarks. Biggest surprise: My Christmas Wish, a breezy Phil Spector inspired number by Johnny Colla of Huey Lewis and the News. Really.

Music Dashing through the discs; it's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas

The deceptively nondescript-looking Holiday Heroes (Soul Purpose, 3 1/2 Stars) is a soul maven's delight, featuring an offbeat roster of artists such as Mavis Staples, Jerry Butler, Dennis Edwards, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham and Graham Parker delivering original Christmas fare.

HOLIDAY HEROES (Soul Purpose).

Soul veterans are in the forefront here, from proficient singers like Mavis Staples, Bobby Womack, Chuck Jackson and Jerry Butler, to less-proficient vocalists who have played major roles as writers, singers and musicians -- Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, Donnie Fritts. Produced by Jon Tiven, who also co-wrote six of the 14 tunes and sings one, I Don't Want to Spend Christmas Alone (co-written by Oldham and Penn). The mood is low-key, the flavor southern-fried, the spirits sweet.

A strong Nashville presence also enhances Holiday Heroes (Soul Purpose, ***), a collection of soul-pop and funky tunes from Dan Penn, Donnie Fritts and Spooner Oldham, among others. Ex-Rascals and Franklin resident Felix Cavaliere sings the title track, written by project producers Jon and Sally Tiven and vocalist Alan Merrill. This one grows on you in a major way.
