General Hints

Spire seems to have gathered the lowest scum among the rogues and thieves who have been banished from Avernum into the Abyss. Although the people here are not directly hostile, they are certainly not in love with you. The town guards at the gates will charge 50 coins to enter, if you have ever refused to pay the 10 coin "toll" to the maraudering ruffians who roam around the Spire area.

Notes

It is always a good idea to talk to everybody. The following notes give hints on hidden rooms, traps and puzzles.

The Arena

There are two entrances to the Arena. The visitors entrance is in the west. You can pay the 20 coins admittance and talk to Scab, who will only tell you about the circlet after you have twice fought in the arena.

So you need to use the combatant's entrance in the SE corner. Zagat will let you in without payment. After you have beaten the monsters you can leave the arena to the SW and get a reward from the ogre on the gate, 100 coins the first time and 200 coins the second. If you fight a third time you will get 300 coins. Since you can speak to Scab from the Arena (after you have killed the monsters), you do not need to pay for entrance to the vistors gallery. The only problem is that a fight does not count until you have collected your reward. There are three different methods of getting Scab to give you the circlet quest:

  1. The straightforward method: enter the arena from the SE and fight the monsters twice, collect your reward twice, pay the entrance fee to the gallery and talk to scab (profit: 280).
  2. The greedy method: fight three times in the arena. After killing the third group of monsters (2 ur-basilisks) but before leaving the arena, talk to Scab (profit 600 coins).
  3. The tricky method: if you have Unlock Doors L3 you can open the door behind Zagat after fighting in the arena twice. You can then enter the arena in the SW corner. If you do not go so far east, that the monsters are triggered, you can talk to Scab.

To the south of the Arena are some prison cells. In one of them is a gremlin, which will sell you the information that there is a secret door in the northern town wall, if you pay it 100 coins – not exactly valuable information!

Hidden Rooms and Passages

Along the north wall of the town is a series of hidden rooms and passages. Entwhistle's shop is behind a hidden door in the NW of the smithy. In the NE corner of the town is a brigand's lair which can be reached through a locked door in Entwhisle's shop (needs Unlock Doors L3) and from outside through a hidden door near the end of the northern town wall. If you have ever angered the maraudering ruffians who wander around the Abyss demanding a toll of 10 coins, you can use this as an entrance to the town thus avoiding the 50 coins you would otherwise have to pay the gate guards. You will of course have kill the brigands (a mage and four soldiers). But you will have to fight them sometime, if you want to get to Meena's circlet.

The Circlet

Sulfras wants a magic circlet and will not let you through to the passage to the surface unless you give it (and the Onyx Sceptre) to her. The search for it involves three very dubious characters.

Scab

Getting him to talk is described above. When you have fought twice in the arena he will tell you that Meena has the circlet but he does not know exactly where. The key was lost by a friend somewhere to the west of Spire (see Silver Key). He also tells you that the circlet is protected by traps and that Asp knows more about them. So off to Asp in Cotra!

Asp

Asp is another rouge but will sell you the information you need for 100 coins.

Meena

You have certainly already met Meena, the Mayor of this town, and already realise that she is upto no good: she recieves packets of stolen goods from Dexter in Almaria; she has been diercting the bandits around Fort Saffron and now you find out that she has stolen a magic circlet that you need.

It is naturally no use barging into Meena's office and demanding the circlet. The northern door in the bandit's lair in the NE of the town leads to a passage with cave slimes. In the western wall is a secret door leading to a room which again has a hidden door in the west wall leading to the chamber with the chest which is unfortunately guarded by two invisible guardians. After disptching the guardians you can open the chest, if you have the Tiny Silver Key and know the password.
