Early Demos, probably recorded 1973 and 1974

Time Bomb Blues / I've Got My Soul / Sunny Side Down / I'm Going Down, Down, Down / Let It Rain / Stay Here Loving You / I Need You / Dance In Your Head / Hey There Believer / Be A Friend Of Mine / Watching All The Rainbows / You Are The Sun / For The Future / Stay Around / Essouaria / Down By The Shore / Edge Of A Broken Dream / Easily Seen

- Fantastic early demos for publisher Stuart Johnson's Tower Bridge Music company, recorded at Johnson's home studio in suburban Middlesex. The slide guitar player should be Noel Brown.

Lightwater, Surrey, UK, probably 1974

Between You & Me / Back To Schooldays / Listen To The Lion (Van Morrison cover)

- This demos were recorded at J.C. Carroll's home. The tape had J.C. (who later was in the Members) on guitar. On bass there probably was J.C.'s brother Paddy that also shortly played with the Members as a replacement for Chris Payne, and/or maybe it was Gary Baker, the original Members lead guitarist.

Southern Comfort restaurant gigs, Finsbury Park, London, UK, 1/1975 until 6/1975

Blue Escape / Don’t It Seem Like A Good Dream Now / Borrowed My Last Smile / Do What You Must / 1978 Space Boy Blues / Summer / Bridge Road Catastrophe (No Relation) / Strictly 9 to 5 / Everybody Let It Loose / Angels With Fangs In Their Mouths / That’s How It Is / Bring It All Down On The Streets

- This are the songs Graham according to his fascinating notes played here that haven't shown up on any other occasion.

London rehearsals, UK, early 1975, probably late February or early March

Sunny Side Down / Back To Schooldays / Still Got My Soul / Don't Ask Me Questions

- These rehearsals consisted of Noel Brown on slide guitar, Paul Riley on bass, and Brian Nevill on drums. Also played on those sessions was a song that many years later became "Children And Dogs," but at that time probably was still called "Just Leave Some Room." It was dumped back then because it was considered too country for the direction GP's songs had begun to take. "Don't Ask Me Questions" originally wasn't written as a reggae until Noel Brown suggested to try it that way.

Phonogram solo demo session, London, UK, 1975

I Got My Soul / Stargazer / The Raid / You're On The Wanted List / Hit Town / Soul Shoes / That's When You Know / Let It Rain / Sunny Side Down / Move It Down The Line / It's Alright Children It's Alright / Gypsy Blood / Express Delivery / Hole In The World / Not If It Pleases Me

- Those GP solo demos were probably taped just after the Phonogram contract at Marble Arch studios. "Express Delivery" has also been performed in the Newlands Tavern days when about half the audience would go to the bar or the bathroom because they'd never heard of him and were only there to see the Rumour. Fools!! All tracks were finally issued in 2001 on the That's When You Know collection.

Phonogram compilation tape, London, UK, 1975

This Phonogram tape box cover from November 19th, 1975, reads:

acoustic1. Gypsy Bloodall
"2. Hole In The Worldall
pick-up band3. Between You And Mehalf
jam band4. Soul Shoeshalf
acoustic5. Sunny Side Downhalf

- Contrary to what the cover says, "Hole In The World" isn't included in full length, but only in half. The version of "Between You And Me" is the Hope & Anchor demo later also included on "Howlin' Wind." The acoustic songs are taken from the 1975 Phonogram solo demo session, see above. On this tape one can still hear GP counting in the numbers, those intros were edited out for the That's When You Know collection. So this, I guess, must have been a Phonogram compilation tape of pre-Howlin' wind GP demos.

The Real Macaw sessions, Ramport Studios, London, 1983

Building Buildings

- Unreleased song from the "The Real Macaw" sessions.

Steady Nerves sessions, Record Plant, NYC, 1984

Soul With No Heart

- Unfinished song from the "Steady Nerves" sessions.

12 Haunted Episodes sessions, late 1994

Turn It Into Hate

- Because this (first version of the) song wouldn't have fitted onto "12 Haunted Episodes," no band was added, but it originally was considered as a possible B-side. Since this didn't happen, it became a demo for the later "Acid Bubblegum" version.

Nine Months soundtrack sessions, Berlin, 6/1995

Time of Your Life

- GP was flown to Berlin to add vocals to this Steve Van Zandt composition, but somehow the version that ended up on the soundtrack was one sung by Little Steven himself.
